Ben Jonson’s intriguing description of Shakespeare – in the opening lines of Shakespeare’s First Folio – as being ignorant of Latin and Greek has tainted readers’ perception of his works ever since… Shakespeare’s language poses fascinating challenges, at the same time providing a model of linguistic creativity and a clear though rich picture of his cultural belonging. In our course centred on The Comedy of Errors we will devote special attention to Shakespeare’s main source – Plautus’ Menaechmi (‘The Twin-Brothers’), showing points of contact and differences between the two texts. Overall, the course aims to provide a first instance of how profound a knowledge of classics inspires Shakespeare’s world not just at
plot level but also at linguistic-stylistic one.
